Our involvement in the Sydney Fishmarket project represents a significant contribution to one of Sydney’s most iconic redevelopment projects. Located in Sydney and designed as a state-of-the-art fish market, this development is currently under construction, poised to become a landmark destination for both locals and visitors alike. We were tasked with the peer review of the cofferdam temporary sheet piling wall, ensuring its compliance with relevant Australian standards. This aspect was particularly challenging due to the innovative and economical system employed by the Japanese contractor for the pile installation, which set a new benchmark for efficiency in construction techniques.
The project, led by the NSW Government with architectural designs by 3XN and construction managed by Multiplex, is situated over the water on a concrete structure supported by marine piles. It is noteworthy for its distinctive wave-shaped and scale-patterned roof, which pays homage to the fishing industry, adding a significant architectural feature to Sydney’s skyline. Our role, in collaboration with CMW Geoscientist, extended to assisting with the peer review and partial design of the cofferdam wall, highlighting our expertise in structural engineering and our commitment to innovation and excellence in construction practices.
Sustainability is a key focus of the project, with the inclusion of a timber roof contributing to its green credentials. The redevelopment aims to double visitation to over 6 million people annually, making it a central hub for the seafood industry and a major food and dining attraction. The new facility will not only enhance the seafood supply chain visibility but also support the local tourism and fishing industries, creating over 700 jobs during its construction phase.
