Hera Engineering’s role in the Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo involved specialised structural engineering solutions, focusing on the use of precast concrete technology. Our task was to design, detail, and oversee the installation of all precast slabs throughout the project, ensuring minimal disruption to the zoo’s daily operations. This was achieved through meticulous planning and the implementation of temporary works designed to facilitate the efficient lifting and placement of the slabs.
The use of precast slabs was a strategic choice, aimed at enhancing the construction process by reducing on-site activities, which was crucial in the sensitive environment of the zoo. Additionally, the precast slabs incorporated void formers to reduce the volume of concrete used, aligning with the project’s sustainability targets. This method not only minimised the ecological footprint but also optimised material usage without compromising structural integrity.
Our engineering solutions were integral in maintaining the project timeline and budget, demonstrating our expertise in delivering complex structural designs under challenging conditions. By implementing innovative techniques such as detailed precast design and advanced temporary works, we ensured that the structural components were not only effective but also environmentally considerate, supporting the project’s goal of achieving a 5-star Greenstar environmental rating.
