The John Gorton Campus Car Park project in Canberra is a significant addition to our portfolio, valued at approximately $80.8 million. As the structural engineering consultants, we were tasked with several challenges that required innovative solutions. The car park is designed to accommodate around 1,100 vehicles, providing much-needed parking space in the area.
One of the key structural elements we employed was post-tensioned slabs, which allowed for a more efficient and robust structure, providing the necessary support for the multi-level car park while optimizing the use of materials.
Another significant challenge was the architectural precast panels. These panels were not only an aesthetic feature but also an integral part of the structural system. We had to ensure that they were designed and installed with precision to maintain the overall structural integrity and meet the architectural vision.
The foundation of the car park presented its own set of challenges due to the poor soil conditions in the area. We opted for piling to provide a stable foundation, which was crucial for the long-term durability and safety of the structure. This method also had the added benefit of reducing the overall concrete volume used in the project, contributing to its sustainability.
Overall, our approach to these challenges was guided by a commitment to engineering excellence and sustainability. We leveraged our expertise in structural engineering to deliver a solution that not only met the project’s technical requirements but also aligned with the environmental and cultural significance of the location.
