Our project, Small Bishop See, in collaboration with Brookfield and Hawaiian, exemplifies a commitment to sustainable development and heritage preservation in Perth. This 10-storey office edifice, designed by Donaldson Boshard, is prominently located at the corner of Spring Street and Mounts Bay Road, poised to become a significant addition to the central Perth skyline. Our role in this endeavour has been crucial, focusing on structural engineering to bring the innovative design to life, particularly through the use of mass timber construction techniques, including cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue laminated timber (glulam).

This approach not only underscores our dedication to environmental stewardship but also aligns with our expertise in employing alternative materials to achieve structural efficiency and aesthetic harmony. The building’s integration within the State heritage listed Bishop’s House and Gardens is a testament to our ability to meld modern construction within sensitive historical contexts.

An innovative aspect of our structural design includes the development and implementation of cantilever pods that project from the facade, a concept we co-developed with the architects. These structural features not only enhance the building’s aesthetic appeal but also present unique engineering challenges. We employed clever structural solutions to ensure these cantilever pods are not only visually striking but also economically feasible to construct. This required meticulous planning and engineering precision to balance aesthetic desires with structural integrity and cost-effectiveness.

Sustainability is at the forefront of the Small Bishop See project, aiming for top industry certifications such as a 5.5 Star NABERS rating, a 6-Star Green Star rating, and an IWBI WELL Gold Core rating. These ambitious targets reflect our holistic approach to sustainability, focusing on both the environmental impact of materials and the well-being of the building’s occupants.

The Bishop’s See Garden Building is not just an office space; it’s a pioneering project in sustainable architecture and structural engineering, showcasing how innovative construction methods can contribute to the preservation of our planet while respecting our heritage. Through this project, we demonstrate our expertise in navigating complex regulatory landscapes to achieve development approval, emphasizing our commitment to excellence and sustainability in structural engineering.
