Hera Engineering is providing structural and civil engineering services for Swan Active Ellenbrook, the City of Swan’s new regional aquatic and recreation facility adjacent to the METRONET Ellenbrook Station.
Designed by DWP Australia with Architecture Studio and delivered by ADCO, the approximately $145 million development includes indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, sports courts, fitness and wellness areas, community facilities and extensive external works.
A key feature of the facility is its large-span structural steel roof, designed to create open, column-free spaces across the main aquatic areas. Minimising internal columns improves visibility, circulation and operational flexibility around the pools, while requiring careful consideration of long-span behaviour, structural stability, deflection, services integration and the durability demands of a highly corrosive aquatic environment.
The structural design also requires close coordination between the building frame, pool shells, wet areas, aquatic plant, waterslides and architectural features. Hera’s integrated structural and civil approach allows critical levels, movement joints, drainage paths and service interfaces to be resolved consistently across the facility.
The civil works include site grading, stormwater drainage, utility connections and coordination with the surrounding public realm and adjacent transport infrastructure. Water-sensitive initiatives include landscaped swales and the reuse of collected roofwater for pool top-up, supporting the project’s target of an equivalent 5 Star Green Star outcome.
