In our collaboration with Multiplex for the ITB Airport Car Park, we were tasked with delivering structural value engineering services to enhance the project’s efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This multi-storey car park, situated in Brisbane, is designed to support the airport’s infrastructure, catering to the increasing demands of travelers and stakeholders alike.
Our primary challenge was addressing the heavy lateral loading imposed by retaining walls on one side of the building. To navigate this, our team proposed a novel buttress system, eliminating the need for anchors. This approach not only adhered to Multiplex’s requirements for a simplified and risk-averse construction process but also showcased our commitment to innovative engineering solutions.
Throughout the tender phase, we explored various structural options, including in-situ and precast hollow core solutions. This flexibility allowed Multiplex to consider a range of strategies that best suited their objectives for the tender, ultimately leading to a design that prioritized speed of construction and cost reduction without compromising on safety or integrity.
While specific sustainability aspects of this project were not detailed in the available information, our approach inherently supported environmental considerations by optimizing material use and streamlining the construction process. This methodology aligns with the broader goals of reducing the environmental footprint of construction projects through efficient design and engineering practices.
