We are currently engaged as structural and civil engineering consultants for the Claremont Medical Center, a project under design in Perth. Collaborating with ADC and MJA, our role is to ensure the structural integrity and functionality of this 3-storey medical centre, which presents unique engineering challenges.

One of the key requirements from the client was to have only a central row of columns, aiming for maximum flexibility in the layout. This request resulted in the need for extremely large spans of up to 15 meters. To address this, we have adopted a design featuring hollow core planks supported by post-tensioned beams, providing the necessary strength while allowing for the desired open spaces.

The specialised nature of the medical centre also requires us to consider vibrations induced by medical equipment and heavy floor loads in our design. Ensuring the stability and safety of the structure under these conditions is paramount.

From a civil engineering perspective, one of the significant challenges has been the diversion of existing sewer lines. This aspect of the project requires careful planning and execution to ensure minimal disruption to the center’s operations and the surrounding area.

Our design also incorporates sustainability considerations, such as the use of pile foundations, which have reduced the overall concrete volume required for the project. This not only minimises the environmental impact but also contributes to the project’s cost-effectiveness.

Overall, our involvement in the Claremont Medical Center project showcases our expertise in both structural and civil engineering, delivering innovative solutions to meet the specific needs of this specialised facility.
