Education buildings (“The Sandstones”) is an iconic and important development within Sydney. It provides physical connectivity from Circular Quay to the commercial core of the Sydney CBD as well as preserving links to Sydney’s heritage.
This project involves the adaptive reuse of the Heritage Listed buildings located on Bridge Street in Sydney to masterfully restore these two buildings into a world-class luxury hotel including a rooftop extension. The Education Building will house 192 luxury hotel rooms, internal pool, spa and gym facilities within the restored heritage fabric. The Lands Building will see conservation and repair works to heritage facades, internal heritage conversation works and adaptive reuse for luxury retail stores, F&B facilities, dining rooms, wellness facilities and event spaces including ballrooms with access to rooftop terraces.
Hera Engineering were appointed by Built and GVK to design the post-tensioned slabs for levels 7 and above for the Education Department Building. The design was particularly challenging due to the limitations of the existing heritage building to support the backpropping loads and cantilevered scaffold. This required specialist temporary design and coordination with the project engineer (TTW) to ensure the existing structure was not overstressed, whilst still allowing the construction to progress rapidly.
