The Treehouse Apartments in Subiaco, Perth, developed by Erben and designed by MJA Studio, with construction by Emco, represent a pinnacle in residential architecture, blending innovative structural engineering with sustainable design principles. This 6-storey residential project, featuring a reinforced concrete frame and a steel roof, has been meticulously planned around key conceptual and functional principles, emphasizing north orientation and natural ventilation.
Hera Engineering played a crucial role in the project, being appointed to assist with the layout and undertake the full structural design. Their involvement led to significant enhancements in the project’s structural efficiency, notably through the adoption of post-tension slabs and the AFS walling system. These choices not only expedited construction and reduced labor on-site but also minimized the need for transfer elements, showcasing Hera Engineering’s ability to integrate great structural ideas with architectural vision.
One of the project’s unique challenges was managing the basement construction, which was completely underwater. The solution included the use of secant pile walls to waterproof the basement and a complex raft foundation to resist hydrostatic uplift, incorporating more than 100 tons of steel.
Treehouse Apartments have received recognition for their architectural excellence, earning a Commendation for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing from the AIA Awards, WA Chapter in 2022. This accolade highlights the project’s innovative approach to design and construction, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and efficient use of space.
