For the UWA Forrest Hall project in Perth, Western Australia, our team was tasked with reimagining the construction approach to the suspended slabs by transitioning to a precast system, specifically the ‘Austral Deck’ system. This strategic shift was aimed at accelerating the construction process for thisA student accommodation facility. The project presented unique structural challenges, including the management of large cantilevers and balcony steps, in addition to addressing significant seismic transfer loads. Leveraging advanced 3D analysis, we were able to model the structure effectively, resulting in an economical slab design that not only met but exceeded the expectations of both the builder and architect.
The hall, completed in 2017, now stands as a 16-meter-high structure, designed to enhance the residential experience for students. It underscores our commitment to innovative engineering solutions, particularly in addressing complex structural demands while adhering to stringent architectural requirements.
