In our capacity as the structural engineering consultants for the Forbes Apartments project in Perth, we delivered comprehensive structural engineering services, including post-tension and temporary works. Located in the vibrant Applecross neighborhood, this residential development comprises a 12-storey reinforced concrete structure with a precast core, marking a significant contribution to the local skyline.

The project, valued at $70 million, represents a collaboration between Mustera Property Group, WOHA, and MJA Studio, forming a mixed-use development that challenges conventional approaches to commercial construction. Forbes Apartments is designed as an innovative vertical village, integrating 34 ultra-luxury apartments with large dual-aspect floor plans​​​​.

Our role encompassed addressing the architectural complexities of the structure, notably its large cantilever slabs and the integration of heavy planter boxes and large trees within various three-storey tall sky gardens. These elements underscored the project’s architectural ambition and complexity, requiring meticulous planning and innovative engineering solutions to realize the schematic vision effectively​​.

Sustainability was a cornerstone of the project, aiming for a five-star GreenStar rating. This ambition was reflected in numerous features, including rooftop solar panels, natural cross-ventilation throughout the building, wind scoops for basement ventilation, low-water landscaping irrigated by greywater, and provisions for electric car charging​​. The project’s green credentials were further enhanced by exceeding the Western Australia Planning Commission’s landscaping requirements, providing 182% of the site area as lush greenery, and incorporating resilient, low-maintenance plants to create a green oasis in the heart of Perth​​.

The Forbes Apartments project not only elevated our portfolio in terms of technical expertise and sustainable design but also allowed us to contribute to the creation of a landmark development that enhances the quality of life for its residents and the broader community.
