St Catherine’s College Curtin University

Located in Perth, this student accommodation facility forms part of Curtin University’s Exchange, an innovative, industry-connected precinct. The facility itself is a 12-storey concrete structure that offers nearly 1000 new beds, aiming to provide a state-of-the-art living experience for students.

In our role as the principal structural engineering consultant for the project, our engagement initiated during the tender phase with Probuild. This collaboration involved a thorough review of the existing structural design. Our comprehensive analysis uncovered significant opportunities for optimization, leading to a complete overhaul of the structural column layout and construction methodologies. These strategic adjustments not only facilitated substantial cost savings but also enhanced the construction pace. Consequently, Probuild secured the project, and we were appointed to deliver the structural engineering services.

Thanks to our value engineering and re-design, the project has achieved a 30% reduction in concrete volume and reinforcement, which notably lowers the building’s permanent embodied energy. This was accomplished by removing transfer slabs, utilising thinner typical floor slabs, incorporating precast core walls and columns, demonstrating our dedication to environmental stewardship while ensuring structural integrity.

The success of the St. Catherine’s College project is a testament to our innovative approach to structural engineering and our commitment to delivering efficient, sustainable solutions. Our involvement from the tender phase through to construction allowed for the realisation of a project that not only meets but exceeds the expectations in terms of quality, sustainability, and functionality.
