Our role in the refurbishment and services upgrade of the Curtin University TL Robertson Library extended significantly beyond traditional structural engineering. Initially, our involvement began during the tender phase, where we provided value engineering advice to Lendlease. By applying our specialised knowledge, we identified opportunities for cost savings without compromising on quality or structural integrity. Our recommendations contributed to making the project financially feasible for the client, which subsequently led to Hera Engineering being appointed as the structural engineer for the job.

As structural designers, we were tasked with the comprehensive structural planning required to integrate a new multi-level structural steel service tower into the existing library. This aspect of our work was crucial for expanding the building’s functionality and ensuring its capacity to support modern demands. The project demanded meticulous attention to preserving the library’s brutalist architectural essence while infusing new life into the structure to meet contemporary needs.

In addition to our design responsibilities, we were also involved in overseeing temporary works. This included ensuring the safety and stability of the existing structure during construction, a task that required innovative engineering solutions to manage the complex interplay between new construction and the existing edifice.

Our early involvement in the project, particularly in providing value engineering solutions, played a pivotal role in the project’s overall success. By optimising structural elements and construction methodologies, we not only ensured the project’s feasibility but also upheld our commitment to sustainable and efficient design practices. This approach allowed for the re-utilisation of the library’s half-century-old structure, extending its lifespan and functionality for future generations.

This comprehensive approach, from preliminary value engineering to detailed structural design and oversight of temporary works, underscores our holistic contribution to the project. It reflects our dedication to engineering excellence, sustainability, and the seamless integration of new structures with cherished historical buildings.
