Designing large, column-free community spaces requires a structural strategy that balances span, vibration, durability, constructability and cost.
At Swan Active Ellenbrook, Hera Engineering is providing structural and civil engineering services for the City of Swan’s new $145 million aquatic and recreation centre, delivered by ADCO Constructions adjacent to the recently opened METRONET Ellenbrook Station.
The project includes major long-span roof structures over the sports court and pool hall areas, with clear spans extending beyond the width of a full basketball court. To support these spaces, our team developed an efficient steel framing solution that reduced steel tonnage, simplified fabrication and helped improve construction efficiency while maintaining the performance requirements of large public assembly spaces.
The broader foundation system also responds to challenging site conditions, including a water table close to slab level. In the pool areas, durability and corrosion protection requirements were considered alongside the structural demands of the long-span roof system and the aquatic environment.
Working with ADCO during tender, Hera developed value engineering alternatives that improved buildability and helped support ADCO’s successful bid as preferred builder.
We look forward to seeing Swan Active Ellenbrook continue to take shape as construction progresses towards completion in 2027.
